When entering a sweepstake, you are likely to be asked to enter the UPC code of a product to complete the entry process. But where can you find this code? Here’s a helpful guide to understanding how the UPC code works.
What does a UPC Barcode mean?
A Universal Product Code or UPC is a barcode symbol that is used by manufacturers so that their products can be identified electronically. It enables digital scanning and tracking of those products. Every UPC comprises a series of bars that are digitally readable in addition to numbers that are verifiable.
Because of UPC codes, products can be identified easily at grocery stores and their inventories can be tracked. That way, stock can also be reordered, detailed receipts can be given and coupons can be scanned by computers. Despite the availability of other barcode systems, UPCs are the most popular tracking system in America, Canada, and other countries.
How does this code work?
A UPC code consists of 12 digits that are specific to a particular product. It can be displayed either via a barcode or printed numbers. The 12 digits comprise three groups of numbers and each set has a different purpose. The first six digits in a product UPC signify the manufacturer, the next five indicate an item number, and the check digit is indicated by the final number. The check digit ensures that the correct number has been scanned.
Why UPC codes are important for sweeps
Sometimes, companies that organize sweepstakes may require a UPC code from one of their products for you to be able to enter the company’s sweeps. But this may not necessarily mean that you have to purchase the product, especially if the sweepstakes is randomly drawn. You can find free UPC codes via online retailers, social media, at the grocery store, or simply through an Internet search.
